    A question about learning Italian?
I was thinking about learning another language, and I would love to learn Italian,so I was wondering a few things about it. I’m not planning on traveling any time soon, considering I’m still a teenager lol,but it just seems like a beautiful language and I would like to go to Italy one day,so I figured, "Why not now?" My questions are how hard it would be to learn, and about how long it would take me to begin speaking it fluently.Any other stuff like that would be helpful.
    Thank you !

I don’t learn Italian (desperately want to though). If you take French, Spanish, Portuguese or some Romance language it would be easier since they’re related. You can’t be fluent in a language quickly, it would still take years. However, it depends on how much time you study, your study and practice methods, etc..

I studied French and Spanish myself, both related to Italian. If you live in the U.S., either of these would be more practical since there is Mexico to the South where people speak the second and Canada to the north where some folks speak the first. Neither would necessitate going to Europe to find somebody to talk to. However, if you live in Europe, Italian might be more practical than Spanish since fewer people visit Spain than Italy even though Spain is every bit as lovely and as warm. But that’s just my opinion.

In any case, since you obviously know English, any of those 3 languages would be about equally easy or difficult to learn since they are so closely related. English got about 60% or so of it vocabulary from an older version of French, so many of the words are relatively easy to pick up. However, in all three languages, there is something called grammatical gender, in which all words are assigned either masculine or feminine gender, as if one were saying "he" or "she" about everything, even chairs and pencils and such, never "it." So that takes a bit of getting used to and somewhat more memorization than the average English speaker is used to. But most people do get used to that part as they go along. The verbs are a little different also, since they use endings more than we do and fewer helping verbs like "do" and "be" and "get" and "go" and so on. They use some helping verbs and we use some endings but the emphasis is different. That, too, takes a little getting used to, but it can be very handy since it allows you to leave out the subject of the sentence, which saves time. Italian sounds more musical and poetic than English does (which tends to be very flat and boring, unless you live in the Caribbean).

As for how long it takes, that depends on how you go about learning it, how hard you work it at, and what method you use, as well as how good you are at memorizing. For those who are somewhat gifted at acquiring languages, it can take as few as two years when totally immersed in the other language, but since you are more likely to be learning the new language in a classroom and only working at it part-time, twice that is more realistic for something approaching fluency. The rule of thumb is, the more you work at it, the faster you achieve fluency. The more you avoid using it, the longer you delay fluency. So keep that in mind.

Yes, Italian is certainly a beautiful language…I’m actually taking my 1st year in HS of Italian and the teacher I have is very good.. My native language is spanish but I also know portuguese; so knowing spanish really made the process of learning Italian much easier..Right now I don’t think I could have a conversation in Italian tho lol. I took 2 yrs of portuguese, and I can have conversations with brazilians.. so it just depends on how you’re planing to learn Italian; with who and whether you like learning new languages (it might make it easier) So if you really like the language, you should definitely give it a shot….so Good Luck!! : )

    Hi, I’m Italian girl =]
Well, learn Italian is very difficult for Americans, as for Italians learn English. In Italy we start to study English at 6 year old and we finish at 18 years old…so we study it for 12 years, and however we often aren’t well in english!
